Students watch a short video about Travelling and Camping on Durable surfaces then go outside and evaluate different surfaces. Students then engage in a discussion about protecting biological soil crusts.
DONT BUST THE CRUST!
Students finish by practicing meadow walking as a way to protect grassy areas from trampling.

Principle 3: Dispose of Waste Properly

After watching the introduction video about disposing of waste properly, students go through a short slideshow about how to poop in the woods and discuss when to pack out toilet paper and even feces. Students also watch a short video on using the groover, a common bathroom system for river trips. Finally students pick up trash around campus.

Principle 5: Minimize Campfire Impact

Students will practice making Leave No Trace fires. Assignments include:
  • Light a one match fire that burns for at least 20 seconds and burns completely to ash
  • Make a poster that communicates how to properly make and extinguish a Leave No Trace Fire
  • Research campfire alternatives
  • Baton a piece of wood and try your hand at feathersticking.
