Types of Energy Part 1

Today we wrapped up our investigation of Newton's cradles and began looking at different types of energy. We discussed potential, elastic potential, chemical potential, and gravitational potential as well as kinetic energy. Tomorrow we will continue learning about the different types of energy that surround us every day.

We begin our study of energy by looking at a Newton's Cradle, which is a device that demonstrates how energy can be transferred within a system. On Monday we built our own Newton's Cradles and yesterday watched a Mythbusters episode about trying to make the worlds largest ever Newton's Cradle.

Today we discussed the Three Major types of friction.
Static Friction - A frictional force that prevents two surfaces from sliding past each other
Sliding Friction  - A frictional force that opposes the motion of two surfaces sliding past each other
Rolling Friction - A frictional force between an object and the surface it rolls on

In class students studied the effects of friction on a sled as they slid down different surfaces.  Friction is a force that opposes motion between two surfaces. Tomorrow we will investigate different types of friction as well as Newton's third law of motion.

Calculating Net Force

Net Force is the total amount of force on an object. To calculate net force, add up all of the forces in the same direction and then subtract all of the forces in the opposite direction. Write your net force with a vector over it indicating the direction of the net force. To further review this, watch the video to the right.
