Law of Conservation of Mass

12/18/2018

First and foremost, if your Sherlock story is still not finished, finish it and submit by the end of the week. Today in class we discussed the law of conservation of mass. Simply put, matter can be neither created nor destroyed, it only changes from one form to another. All the matter that exists in the world has been here since the beginning and isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Now it's your turn to write your very own Sherlock Holmes story. Using the investigation work we did over the last several days of class you will write your own story starring you! This story will be the last summative grades for the quarter and is due at the beginning of class on Thursday. Come to class tomorrow ready with a title for your tale. In class we will use chromebooks to continue writing our stories.

Sherlock Holmes is often regarded as the greatest detective of all time. Although he is a fictional character, he was one of the first detectives to use evidence and the science of deduction to solve crimes. His influence modern police work is immense as is his impact on pop-culture. Today we read a selection from the very first Sherlock Holmes story, "A Study in Scarlet," written by Arthur Conan Doyle more than 100 years ago. Within the first few pages of the story Sherlock uses the scientific method to create a new blood test that can be used to convict or exonerate suspects. We will further analyze the text tomorrow in class. I've attached a copy of the entire story, "A Study in Scarlet" below if you would like to read the whole thing!
