Speedy Lab: Calculating Speed and Acceleration

1/23/2018

Today we raced! Students ran and race-walked across the gymnasium, while their peers timed them at distances of 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 feet.
Once we had all of our data recorded, we began to analyze it by calculating speed from the distance and time measurements.
Tomorrow we will graph and further analyze our data as well as conclude our lab.

Today's colorful lab had students investigating the pH of different household chemicals as well as creating their own color coded pH scale. We used red cabbage juice pH indicator to create our scale. The video to the right further explains pH and some photos of our lab are below.

Potions with Slughorn and the Law of Conservation of Mass

12/4/2017

Chemistry is a lot like potions class from the world of Harry Potter. And just like with Harry, sometimes we need to make notes on our instructions to get the best results. In class today students conducted an investigation into the law of conservation of mass. If you would like to try this experiment our lab sheet is attached below.

The only clue left at the crime scene is a mysterious white powder. Students will analyze 6 different known powders, associated with 6 different suspects, to determine the identity of the whiteboard thief! This activity is modified for 8th grade, based on The Proof is in the Powder, originally designed for the International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes. Students will finish their investigation tomorrow and complete this assignment by writing a crime report that is due Monday.
